A suitable stem improves your control over the bike by altering handlebar height and reach. Top-load stems provide more height and therefore more leverage, while front-load stems sit lower and shift the center of gravity forward. Stem length (reach) also influences handling: shorter for agile street setups, longer for more stability. All models in this category are designed for the standard 22.2 mm clamp and 1 1/8" steerer tubes, and are usually made of CNC-machined aluminum for high stiffness at a low weight.
